Teeth are intentionally moved during orthodontic treatment. To prevent them from returning to their original position, it is essential to reinforce the result for a period of time following treatment. This phase is called "retention."
Teeth are stabilized either by gluing wires to the inside of the teeth--an invisible and unobtrusive solution--or by wearing removable appliances, such as clear retainers, at night.
